Northbrook, IL – Building Inspector

The Village of Northbrook, Illinois (population 35,222), is a thriving, progressive community strategically located 25 miles north of Chicago. The Village’s Development & Planning Services Department seeks a highly motivated and skilled individual for the position of Building Inspector. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, the Building Inspector performs field inspections of work in progress or completed under approved building permits for conformance with local and state building codes; issue notices of violations and consults with architects, engineers, specialty contractors and homeowners; maintains inspection records, assists with plan review for single-family construction and minor commercial, industrial, and office additions as assigned; and cooperates with the Village Engineer and Fire Department in the enforcement of their respective codes during natural disasters.

Qualified candidates will have a thorough knowledge of local building codes and regulations.  This position must have the ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, site plans, and use a computer with working knowledge of Microsoft Office as well as learn other software applications as needed. Meeting deadlines, multitasking and establishing/maintaining effective working relationships with contractors, the general public, and other department employees is a must.

The Position requires a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license issued in the State of Illinois and five years of equivalent experience in the building trades.  Desirable candidates will also possess International Code Council (ICC) Certifications in residential and commercial Building Inspection and Mechanical Inspection.

Starting Salary Range is $80.000 – $94,000 DOQ. Position will be open until filled, however submittal by July 15, 2024, is encouraged.
