Fire Chief/Fire MarshalUnion Fire District, MO (approximately 20,000)With both an urban and rural community setting in the “Heart of Franklin County,” Union MO is the County Seat for Franklin County in Missouri. The district is approximately 40% agricultural, 45 percent residential and 15% industrial. The District is located just 45-minutes west of St. Louis MO and covers over 96 mi2. The growth in the residential sector of the District has been booming in recent years.
 
The Board and members are seeking a fire service and EMS leader prepared to meet the demands of a district that also includes several Ameren (Utility Provider) substations, the East Central College campus, and four major petroleum pipelines (Explorer, ConocoPhillips, Missouri Pipeline and Enbridge). The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office also runs an Adult Corrections Center within the district. The next Fire Chief/Fire Marshal will be an individual with a clear and dynamic vision for providing excellent, proactive emergency services. The position offers the ideal candidate the chance to build on a strong tradition of excellence as the area continues to evolve. 
 
The District is governed by a 3-member Board of Directors.
 
  • The District staff includes the Fire Chief/Fire Marshal, Deputy Fire Chief, Assistant Chief, Division Chief/Inspector, and an Executive Secretary.
  • Operations are set from (3) active fire stations (property is owned for a 4th future station) staffed by career and volunteer firefighters and firefighter/EMT’s. Station 1 and 3 are staffed with career members and Station 2 is staffed with volunteers. The District passed a referendum for a tax increase in 2018 to provide full-time staffing at Station 3.
  • The District features a current inventory of response apparatus including a 75’ Quint, (3) Engines/Pumpers, (2) Tenders, (2) Brush Trucks and the UASI Strike Team 5 Technical Rescue tractor trailer covering Trench, Structural Collapse, Confined Space rescues and air cascade and light tower support features. Calls for service are over 1,800 per year.
  • The department provides primary EMS response along with the Union Ambulance District (separate agency, 4,300+ calls annually, 3 ALS staffed ambulances daily). EMS system certification services are provided by SSM Health who operates in Missouri, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. Both the Union Fire District and Union Ambulance District line staff are members of IAFF Local 2665.
Qualified candidates should have:
  • A bachelor’s degree in public safety administration or related field from an accredited college or university. A master’s degree is preferred. 
  • Experience in a managerial role in the fire and emergency medical services, including a minimum of five years of experience in a progressively responsible command/supervisory positions at the rank of Deputy Fire Chief, Battalion Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, or equivalent duties and responsibilities commensurate with the position.
  • The successful completion of Missouri Fire Officer 1 and 2 certification and/or Chief Fire Officer Designation is desired. 
  • Experience as an innovative, collaborative fire/EMS leader with demonstrated staff management, interpersonal and customer service skills. 
  • Well-developed writing and public speaking skills and the utmost integrity.
 
The starting salary range is $81,500 +/- DOQ. Benefits include L6 Lagers retirement, full medical, vision and dental. Residency is required in the district.
