City of Naperville

The City of Naperville’s Public Works Department is currently seeking a skilled Building Engineering Technician to operate, maintain, and repair major mechanical and electrical systems for public buildings, including absorbers, centrifugal chillers, and various sizes of DX systems.  The Building Engineer monitors and adjusts building temperatures & pressures and tests & treats water system for chillers and boilers.  This role will also have the opportunity to participate in in-house construction projects.

Salary Information:

This position is represented by IUOE Local 399 union. 2024 starting rate of $40.1634 per hour.  2025 wage will be implemented once a new collective bargaining agreement is ratified.

Duties

  • Maintains, operates, troubleshoots, and repairs chillers, boilers, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, and air handlers for designated City buildings.
  • Monitors, adjusts, troubleshoots, and repairs temperature control systems for building equipment and for individual rooms.
  • Tests soft water, boiler water, chilled water, and condenser water systems in buildings; treats with chemicals as necessary.
  • May oversee outside contractor service and repair work for mechanical or other equipment or systems.
  • May be required to be on stand by or on-call after hours and carry a pager and lap top computer to access, adjust, or respond to equipment and/or building alarms.
  • Assists in maintenance department as needed.
  • Plows/shovels/removes snow, de-ices, and applies salt as required.   Participates in the City’s overall snow/de-icing operation.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • A high school diploma or equivalent plus additional specialized training.
  • Three to five years of experience with major mechanical equipment such as boilers, centrifugal chillers, absorption units, hydronic heating, large air handling units, building environmental control, fundamentals of computerized DDC, and utility distribution systems.
  • A Stationary Engineers License from either Elgin or Chicago.
  • CFC certified, Type II required (or a universal certification preferred).

A valid State of Illinois Class D driver’s license.
