SALARY RANGE: $31.938-$36.926/Hour

*Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint for range.

 

NATURE OF WORK:

Keeps the Police Station in clean and orderly condition for the Police Department by performing general maintenance and cleaning during the regular workweek, Monday through Friday.  Performs additional duties including, but not limited to, storage upkeep and transporting mail to and from the Civic Center.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):

 

Removes trash and debris from both the interior and exterior of the police station including the Annex.
Maintains floors to include sweeping, mopping, stripping, and waxing.
Cleans all secured offices not covered under maintenance contract, i.e. the Chief of Police’s office and OPS offices.
Maintains building, performing minor and routine painting, washing walls, cleaning window treatments, washing windows, and minor repairs of equipment.
Maintains orderly atmosphere and reports unsafe or unsatisfactory conditions.
Informs management of the need for major repairs regarding lighting, heating, and physical structure.
Removes snow and debris from sidewalks, picks-up litter, etc.
Cleans, sweeps, mops, and sanitizes both male and female jails and cells.
Shampoos the carpets and cleans hall mats.
Orders and maintains supplies and equipment and maintains inventory of the same.
Transports mail to and from the Civic Center.
Assists in the unloading of delivery trucks and delivers packages internally during regular business hours.
Performs other duties as assigned.
 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

Must possess a high school diploma, GED or higher.

Must possess two (2) or more years of progressively responsible work experience in building and custodial operations or trades.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

▪           Ability to work with, mentor, and supervise staff.

▪           Knowledge of the materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in restroom cleaning, safe operation of vehicles and general public clean-up.

▪           Ability to read, understand, and apply instructions for the safe operation of cleaning supplies and tools, as well as hand tools.

▪           Ability to read, understand, interpret and locate addresses within the City of Evanston boundaries illustrated on a Map.

▪           Ability to multi-task in performing various duties, requests and responsibilities.

▪           Knowledge of the hazards and necessary precautions required when using cleaning equipment and chemicals.

▪           Ability to operate hand and power tools such as buffing machines and vacuums in a safe and effective manner.

▪           Ability to read, understand and apply instructions for the safe application of chemicals and/or cleaning supplies.

▪           Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.

▪           Ability to greet the public in a courteous manner.

▪           Knowledge of cleaning operations, procedures, and practices.

▪           Knowledge of personal computers and their applications.

▪           Knowledge of supervisory methods and practices.

▪           Ability to assign, plan, and schedule the work of others.

▪           Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

▪           Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with others.

▪           Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the public and employees.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

Work is performed both inside and outside with possible exposure to extreme temperatures.  Work may require frequent walking.

 

Ability to work in confined spaces and to work safely around operating equipment.

 

Ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly in order to move objects.

 

Ability to work outdoors, occasionally, in a variety of weather conditions such as extreme cold, high winds, rain, snow, sleet, high temperatures and humidity.

 

Ability to perform heavy manual labor including, but not limited to, lifting heavy objects, climbing, sitting or standing for long periods of time; bend, crawl, identify or distinguish colors, recognize depth of objects, focus on small or distant objects, talk and hear.

 

Frequently exposed to dangerous equipment, loud noises, vibrations, dust, dirt and odors

 

Ability to lift chairs and tables and deliver heavy merchandise to department.

 

SUPERVISION:

Work is performed under the general direction/supervision of the Service Desk/311 Manager or designee. The employee receives daily projects and assignments which will vary from season to season and day to day.  Assignments can be either verbal, written or through email, phone call or text message with the employee determining proper procedure and work methods and is responsible for completing the work according to City work rules and safety regulations.  Work is reviewed through ongoing observation, written and verbal communication, meetings, and feedback from supervisors and other department employees.  Guidance is provided through rules and regulations, policies and procedures, Unified Work Rules, Union Contract, Personnel Rules and OSHA. Work is evaluated at least annually for the safe and skilled operation of equipment, quality of tasks, adherence to work rules, and performance in accordance with classification standards.

 

PUBLIC CONTACT:

The employee has regular contact with the general public as well as other City employees to answer general questions, set up meeting rooms and describe general maintenance issues.  The employee may need to respond to questions and complaints and provide general direction to the public; the employee has regular contact with other City employees in order to share information and complete work assignments and programming initiatives.
