Village of Arlington Heights

The Village of Arlington Heights is seeking an innovative Building Division Manager & Building Official to lead the Plan Review and Inspection teams within our collaborative and forward-thinking Building & Life Safety Department. This role offers the opportunity to and shape the future of building safety in the Village of Arlington Heights.

As a representative of the Building & Life Safety Department, you will interpret building codes, support residents, businesses, and contractors, and serve as a liaison to the Village Board and Building Code Review Board. The role includes monitoring department performance metrics, implementing process improvements, coordinating across departments to resolve challenges, and preparing reports, memos, and recommendations for public presentation. The Building Division Manager & Building Official will supervise plan reviewers and inspectors, including evaluating performance, providing training, and ensuring professional development.

In addition, this role requires managing residential and commercial construction plan reviews, enforcing compliance with ICC I-Codes, Village amendments, and Illinois regulations. You will also oversee construction projects, especially ones that are issued a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy, to ensure that all requirements are met for final approvals. Strong leadership, decision-making, and communication skills are essential, along with proficiency in Revu Bluebeam, Tyler EPL, and Building Code researching tools.

Candidates should have a minimum of 10 years of experience in the building and construction fields, with at least two years of supervisory experience in a municipal environment or five years in construction management. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in building codes, construction, and permitting and will hold International Code Council Certified Building Official certification, or have the ability to obtain within one year. A Master Code Professional and/or Certified Fire Marshal certification is preferred, as is professional licensure in Architecture or Engineering in the State of Illinois. A bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field is required. The salary range for this position is $122,962-165,997, with an anticipated hiring range of $122,962-$130,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
