The City of Aurora is accepting applications for the position of Equipment Service Worker / Equipment Technician in the Division of Fleet.

Equipment Service Worker / Equipment Technician:

Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled and skilled mechanical work in the diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and reconditioning of all City vehicles and equipment. Repairs and replaces gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, clutches, brakes, radiator, universal, differentials, hydraulic and exhaust systems. Drives service trucks and performs road service calls, drive vehicles for road testing to and from maintenance facilities and runs errands to supply houses.

Other duties of these positions may include but are not limited to: Performing preventative and routine maintenance and repair work on all types of City vehicles and equipment as well as locating, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical defects; Performs welding and fabrication in forming, bending, and tempering metals on various vehicles or equipment; Prepares list of parts needed for automobile and equipment repair and forwards to supervisor for approval; utilizes testing and repair equipment to diagnose, locate, and repair complex faults found in various 6, 12,and 24 volt electrical systems. Designs and builds custom circuits to support various automotive accessories.

Successful candidates should have working knowledge of the principles of gasoline and diesel mechanics as applied to the maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment; Working knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of various automobiles, trucks, vans, and heavy equipment; Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical defects in a wide variety of vehicles and equipment; Ability to weld and to perform simple blacksmith operations; Extensive knowledge of all types of automotive shop tools and equipment.

Qualifications for Hire:

Equipment Service Worker: This position requires a high school diploma or G.E.D.; preferably supplemented by completion of vocational courses in automotive mechanics; Requires a minimum of three years’ experience in servicing and maintaining automotive vehicles and equipment with progressive levels of duties and responsibilities; Requires possession of a Class ‘B’ CDL within 6 months of hire

Equipment Technician: This position requires a high school diploma or G.E.D.; preferably supplemented by completion of vocational courses in automotive technology; Requires two years of experience as an Equipment Service Worker or other equivalent experience; Requires possession of a Class ‘A’ CDL Driver’s License with six (6) months of hire; Six (6) ASE Certifications or EVT Fire Apparatus Technician level 1-3 or EVT Ambulance Technician level 1-3 within six (6) months of hire.

Must successfully pass pre-hire requirements including but not limited to a written exam, physical, drug screen, and background check.

Equipment Service Worker and Equipment Technician are both full-time, union positions.

Beginning salary for Equipment Service Worker is $31.40/hour, after 6 months $32.12/hour, after 1 year $32.83/hour, and annual increases thereafter. Beginning salary for Equipment Technician is $36.62/hour, after 6 months $37.42/hour, after 1 year $38.26/hour, and annual increases thereafter.  Excellent benefit package, including ASE Certifications and a Tool Allowance.
