Waushara County, Wisconsin is accepting applications for the role of Highway and Solid Waste Commission. As the Commissioner, you will direct all operations of the County highway department.  Performs work governed by Wisconsin State Statute 83.01 and County policy.  Work involves full responsibility for establishing policies and procedures, administrating annual budget and controlling expenses.  Limited supervision by the Highway Committee, with a wide latitude for the exercise of technical and administrative judgment.  Works cooperatively with other government agencies. Administers and maintains County owned collection sites and buildings.  Coordinates and supervises operations of County Solid Waste program.

The successful candidate must be a strong leader, communicator, and have the ability to plan, organize and administer efficient highway operations. They must work cooperatively with Federal, State, County and Township officials and deal with political problems and maintain good public relations. You will have shown skills of setting priorities and working within allocated funds; maintaining morale; handling personnel; political matters and decision making. A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a highway related field, five to which have been in supervisory positions. Bachelor’s degree is preferred with emphasis on highway maintenance, business administration, waste management or related field

This is an in-person position. Preference will be given to residents of Waushara County or those willing to relocate prior to start date.

·         Work involves full responsibility for establishing department policies, procedures, controlling expenses and actively obtain work for the department.

·         Technically advises the Highway Committee so they can make astute political judgments on pending programs and policies affecting the County highway operations.

·         Exercises diplomacy in personnel management as to attain the best job efforts of all employees.

·         Ensure all employees comply with safety procedures, department rules and provisions of the Personnel Policy.

·         Works cooperatively with a wide variety of governmental agencies and officials, landowners and the general public.

Qualifications:

·         Bachelor’s degree preferred with experience in highway maintenance, business administration, waste management or related field.  Four to six years’ experience in supervision of personnel and recycling.

·         Seminars in highway policy, personnel management and business administration. Strong leadership abilities with proven experience in team building, conflict resolution, and decision-making.

·         Five to seven years’ experience working in a highway related field, five to which have been in supervisory positions.

·         Ability to work effectively in an environment where meeting the demands of the public requires ingenuity and adaptation to change.  Ability to be congenial and maintain a professional demeanor with the public, volunteers and co-workers at all times.

Salary and Benefits:  Salary for this position will range from $81,806.40 – $86,881.60 based on qualifications and experience. Waushara County offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plans, generous paid time off, and professional development opportunities.
