Under the direction of the Fleets and Facilities Division Superintendent, this individual is responsible for performing highly skilled work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of automotive and related equipment.

Work involves responsibility for performing skilled repair and maintenance work on a variety of automotive equipment including passenger, police, fire, and emergency vehicles, trucks, tractors, mowers, and other construction and maintenance equipment.  Work is evaluated for completeness, economy, and efficiency. Efficiencies shall be comparable with outside shops relevant to the repair.

Examples of Essential Duties

Essential functions of the job include:

Inspects, diagnoses, tests, repairs and maintains a variety of automotive equipment, including trucks, police vehicles, fire apparatus, graders, backhoes, tractors, and other mechanical equipment; uses electrical and computerized test equipment for diagnostic testing.

Tests, repairs and maintains all vehicle and equipment systems, including transmissions, hydraulic, fuel, electrical and electronic, brake, cooling, and emissions systems; sets up new vehicles and equipment.

Performs complex diagnostics, major maintenance, overhaul, and repairs as required; performs minor routine maintenance such as oil changes, lubrication, and grease jobs; performs preventive maintenance checks on oil, hoses, batteries, etc.; changes and repairs tires and wheels.

May alter, adjust, or customize equipment to accomplish specific tasks; organizes and keeps shop, work area and tools clean.

Mounts accessories such as wiring harnesses, lights, control panels, gunlocks, bumpers, and related items on emergency vehicles and snow removal equipment.

References paper and online service, parts and repair manuals; fills out paper and electronic work orders; keeps records of repairs accomplished; orders parts for needed repairs.

Performs safety inspections, maintenance and repairs on stationary and portable generators.

Performs welding, fabricating and surface preparation of city equipment.

Attends training programs and classes to remain up to date on new automotive maintenance techniques.

May have to respond to after-hours emergency call for snow plowing duties; makes emergency road calls and repairs out in the field.

Provides effective and efficient customer services and promotes and maintains responsive community relations.

Follows safe work practices.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by vocational training in a variety of areas associated with automotive equipment; considerable experience in maintaining, repairing, and servicing automotive and construction vehicles and equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills.

Qualified applicants should also be able to demonstrate excellent customer service along with the ability to effectively solve problems and exercise good judgment with outstanding organizational and time management skills, and also be detail oriented with multi-tasking capabilities in a fast paced environment.

Considerable knowledge of the of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of automotive, construction, and maintenance equipment, including gasoline and diesel engines and hydraulic systems.

Also need considerable knowledge of the workings and operations of an automotive repair shop, available resource material on automotive, construction, and maintenance equipment, in addition to knowledge of the safety precautions and hazards of the work.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, meet the physical requirements of the position, establish and maintain effective working relationships, communicate effectively, and the ability to learn a broad range of skills.

Special Requirements 
Possession of a valid Illinois Class “B” Commercial driver’s license with airbrake and tanker endorsements.

ASE Certifications (A1- A8, T1- T8, L1, L2), with the ability to obtain Master Certified within one year and EVT Certifications (F1- F6, E0– E5, L1) are preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work in outside weather conditions.   The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts; in precarious places; and is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration.

Supplemental Information

The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Weekend and/or night hours are required, for scheduled and emergency work such as fleet repairs and snow/ice control activities.  Must be willing and able to be on-call and respond to after-hours call-backs for emergency situations as necessary.

The salary range of $34.70-$47.01/hour is dependent on the candidate’s ASE and/or EVT certifications.  The City also provides an excellent benefit package including health, dental and life insurance effective on your first day of employment, participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund pension, 10 paid holidays, and vacation and sick hours that are earned on a monthly basis.
