City Engineer– City of Hartford, Wisconsin (16,038). Located in the beautiful historic city in Washington and Dodge Counties. Hartford is a vibrant community in southeast Wisconsin known for the Wisconsin Auto Museum, the Schauer Art Center and its numerous parks and recreational opportunities. The City also has three industrial parks and an active business community. The City is seeking an Engineer to lead the Engineering Services department. 
 
This position is a key member of the City’s management team in a financially stable organization. The City is governed by a Mayor and nine alderpersons elected on a non-partisan basis in three districts. The City’s budget is $50 M (all funds), and there are 135 regular Full Time/Part Time employees, with this position having direct supervision of four staff and a budget of $486k. The City’s next Engineer should be a technically skilled and collaborative professional capable of managing a variety of the City’s engineering and public works projects. This position is a source of information and assistance to planning, design, coordination, contracting and supervision of construction and capital improvements including current information on public utilities, maps, and construction records. The City Engineer works closely with the other City department heads concerning new developments and involving existing improvements and acts as a consultant to the City Council and other City officials on all engineering matters.
 
The City seeks an ethical and experienced professional with strong technical and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate must have an inclusive managerial style, as well as clear, concise, and open communication skills including the ability to navigate the political process in order to achieve the approved goals of the City. 
 
The successful candidate will:
  • Have a confident fluency in design and preparation of plans and specifications for various public works projects;
  • Have background in project management and leadership;
  • Have the ability to problem-solve, make critical decisions and supervise employees;
  • Have a desire to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with the public and elected leaders;
  • Have the ability to manage the former municipal landfill and the City’s MS4 stormwater permit and projects; and
  • Have a passion for teamwork and the ability to work collaboratively with all City departments in the delivery of municipal services.
 
Candidates should also have:
  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited program. A Wisconsin P. E. or the ability to acquire one in 6 months is required. 
  • Five years of progressive experience is preferred. 
 
The City offers a starting salary of $93,000 to $115,000 +/- DOQ, plus exceptional benefits second to none in the public sector including WRS and health insurance.
