Village of Downers Grove

The Village of Downers Grove is seeking a Public Education Specialist who is responsible for coordinating and presenting Fire Department public education programs. This role also manages the Community Care Program, along with the Fire and Life Safety Community Risk Reduction programs. A successful candidate will be knowledgeable of basic trends and developments in public education, injury prevention, and victim assistance programs, plus be able to coordinate and direct multiple complicated issues and projects with strong organizational skills.

Major Duties and Functions:
– Develops, schedules, and presents educational programs
– Develops and maintains partnerships with community-based organizations, schools, and businesses
– Analyzes data and makes recommendations for community outreach and risk reduction programs
– Directs Fire Department special events and assists other Village and community agencies in planning special events or educational activities
– Trains and assists department employees involved in Fire and Life Safety Education
– Develops and monitors the budget for the program
– Serves as the department public information officer and liaison to Village PIO
– Coordinates the department’s Youth Firesetter Intervention Program
– Responds to calls for service to provide victim assistance
– Responds to inquiries or complaints from citizens concerning fire prevention programs
– Other duties, as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
– Knowledge of firefighting, emergency medical services, and public administration principles
– Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, government officials, and the general public
– Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are essential.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent, with preferred five years of relevant fire service experience; or any combination of education and experience, which produces the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications: Certified Fire Prevention Officer I and Fire Life Safety Educator required within eighteen (18) months of appointment, along with a valid Driver’s License

Salary and Benefits: The full salary range for this position is $67,119 – $92,290, with a maximum starting salary of $80,543 dependent on qualifications. The Village provides an excellent benefits package, including health insurance, dental, vision, and life insurance, and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
