Director of Public WorksBurlington, WI (pop. 11,047). Incorporated in 1886, Burlington is a growing, full-service community located in Racine County approximately 30 miles southwest of Milwaukee and 70 miles northwest of Chicago. Located along the banks of the Fox and White rivers, Burlington offers a superior quality of life. The community has excellent schools, an aquatic center, 28 parks, a thriving downtown and several successful industrial parks. The City is also experiencing residential growth along its southern corridor. 
 
The City seeks a high-energy, organized, proactive public works professional to direct a broad range of services including streets, parks and facilities, and utilities (water and wastewater treatment). The ideal candidate is an innovative, collaborative thinker and ready to be an integral member of the senior management team. 
 
The Director is responsible for leading a department of approximately 23 full-time employees plus 7 – 10 seasonal workers, as well as managing more than $9 million in general fund and enterprise budgets. The City maintains an aggressive capital improvement program. The Director reports to the City Administrator. 
 
Qualified candidates should have:
  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, public administration, or an engineering-related field, or an associate’s degree in one of these disciplines plus three years of experience; 
  • Comparable successful employment experience performing similar essential duties and responsibilities may be considered in substitution for a degree; 
  • Candidates with city management experience, yet significant work in public works, are also encouraged to apply; and 
  • Five years of experience in the supervision and management of public works operations, utility operations and/or road construction is ideal. 
 
Candidates should also possess:
  • Well-developed skills in effective service delivery and creative problem-solving; and 
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and listening skills with a variety of stakeholders. 
 
A starting salary range is $106,000 – $112,000 (midpoint) +/- DOQ, and an excellent benefit package is offered.
